Why do leap years exist?

  • Leap year
  • Gregorian calendar

Leap years exist to keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth's revolutions around the Sun. It takes the Earth about 365.24 days to orbit the Sun. To account for the extra 0.24 days, an extra day is added every four years.
